Why Fridges Are Tricky
Refrigerators have two characteristics that make them harder to power than most appliances:
1. They Run 24/7 (Sort Of)
A fridge doesn't draw power continuously. The compressor cycles on and off:
- •Running wattage: 60–150W (when the compressor is on)
- •Actual duty cycle: ~40-50% of the time
- •Effective daily consumption: Running watts × 24h × 0.4-0.5 duty cycle
For a typical mini fridge (60W rated):
60W × 24h × 0.5 duty cycle = 720 Wh per day
For a full-size fridge (150W rated):
150W × 24h × 0.4 duty cycle = 1,440 Wh per day
2. Compressor Startup Surge
When a fridge compressor kicks in, it draws 3x its rated wattage for a fraction of a second. This is the "startup surge" or "inrush current."
- •60W mini fridge → 180W surge
- •150W full-size fridge → 450W surge
Your power station's inverter must handle this surge, or it will trip the overload protection and shut off.
