How to Power a Refrigerator with a Portable Power Station

"Can I run my fridge on a portable power station?" is one of the most common questions in the off-grid community. The answer is yes — but the details matter.

The Short Answer

  • Mini fridge (45-60L): You need at least 500 Wh for 8 hours, 1,000 Wh for a full day
  • Full-size fridge: You need at least 1,500 Wh for a full day, 3,000+ Wh for multi-day backup
  • Inverter wattage: Must handle 3x the fridge's rated watts due to compressor startup surge

Why Fridges Are Tricky

Refrigerators have two characteristics that make them harder to power than most appliances:

1. They Run 24/7 (Sort Of)

A fridge doesn't draw power continuously. The compressor cycles on and off:

  • Running wattage: 60–150W (when the compressor is on)
  • Actual duty cycle: ~40-50% of the time
  • Effective daily consumption: Running watts × 24h × 0.4-0.5 duty cycle

For a typical mini fridge (60W rated):

60W × 24h × 0.5 duty cycle = 720 Wh per day

For a full-size fridge (150W rated):

150W × 24h × 0.4 duty cycle = 1,440 Wh per day

2. Compressor Startup Surge

When a fridge compressor kicks in, it draws 3x its rated wattage for a fraction of a second. This is the "startup surge" or "inrush current."

  • 60W mini fridge → 180W surge
  • 150W full-size fridge → 450W surge

Your power station's inverter must handle this surge, or it will trip the overload protection and shut off.

Minimum inverter requirements:
  • Mini fridge: 300W+ inverter (most power stations qualify)
  • Full-size fridge: 600W+ inverter
